Affordable Energy for Humanity Innovation Lab: Accelerating Energy Access Soultions
Provision of clean and affordable energy services and systems presents a major opportunity to enhance quality of life for off-grid communities and individuals in the developing world. AE4H was established in 2015 by the University of Waterloo and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in order to harness sectoral knowledge and innovation capacity in order to accelerate clean, low-cost solutions to energy poverty.

This invitation-only event will bring together 40+ leading thinkers from research institutions, the private and public sector, and NGO and finance organizations in order to identify and scope key areas where collaboration and innovation are needed. An 'Innovation lab' model will be utilized as a non-traditional, highly interactive and focused process for participants to work through in order to explore the energy access challenge space. The lab will further seek to develop implementable work plans, built on the best practices knowledge, specific expertise, and dependable capacities of participants and other sectoral partners. The AE4H initiative will support the further development of these collaborative projects after the event. It is highly recommended that all participants attend the entire 2.5 day event, from the morning of Thursday June 15th to the afternoon of Saturday June 17th.
Key Themes
Participants will work to identify specific challenges that are both highly desirable (meeting them would create major positive impact) and feasible (they can be reasonably overcome by some group of participants and/or external partners). It is intended that these challenges will emerge from two thematic content areas: technological innovation and capacity building.
Two additional process-oriented themes will be discussed in order to develop best practices for addressing the challenges. These themes are: working in the field with local partners and running a successful research to impact lab.

A keynote address will be delivered jointly by Dan Kammen, Founding Director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, & Thomas Gottschalk, CEO of Mobisol Group.
Funding
This event is funded by partners at the University of Waterloo, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Waterloo Global Science Initiative. We kindly ask that invitees cover their own cost of travel, where possible. Travel funding will be made available for those who otherwise could not attend. Accommodation and food throughout will be provided at no cost.
Opportunities for Students and Early Career Individuals
Invitees are asked to nominate any graduate students, post-docs or other early career individuals who they feel would benefit significantly from attendance. A single page nomination letter should be sent to npmoore@uwaterloo.ca. The organizers will choose approximately 5-10 nominees to attend the event. Funding will be offered to cover the cost of attendance for these individuals.
