WISE Public Lecture: Utility of the Future – Perspective from a Local Distribution Company
Umar Waqas, P.ENG, CEM, Director, Engineering Services, Energy+ Inc.
The electricity sector is expected to undergo an unprecedented amount of change which has implications for utility shareholders, private markets, and end customers. This change is driven through technological improvements, cost reductions in alternative sources, and changing consumer preferences. The perspective from a Local Distribution Company looks at the opportunities this presents for shifting the conventional poles/wires business to a service organization that empowers customers to part-take in the sector and become involved in making sustainable decisions. The uncertainties that come with change are discussed to provide the audience an appreciation of the technical and regulatory challenges that impact decision making.
Umar is an energy sector professional with a strong passion to address the challenges of the 21st century electricity system as they relate to integrating new technologies, enabling market reforms, and re-shaping consumer experience. Umar is currently the Director of Engineering at Energy+ Inc. where he is overseeing power system refurbishment projects that will involve integrating renewable energy, electric vehicle charging stations, advanced communication systems, and improve consumer interaction with utility markets.
