Canada has some of the greatest renewable energy potential of any country on Earth. By 2050, WWF believes our nation could-and should-be powered entirely by green energy. However, if we're going to convince decision makers to take full advantage of Canada's renewable energy potential, persuade industry to invest in renewable energy projects and inspire Canadians by the millions to support the vision, we need to provide the facts and the tools to show that renewable is doable.
That's why WWF is teaming up with researchers at the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy. Together with lead investigator Dr. Geoff Lewis and two bright young graduate students, Grace Arabian and Janine Vanry, we've launched a project to map renewable energy potential across the country. Our goal is to put together hard data that shows just how much accessible, reliable sources of renewable energy Canada can tap.
The resulting map will generate a new conversation in Canada. It will encourage citizens to demand sustainable energy policies. It will inspire politicians to imagine new possibilities. It will give engineers the concrete information they need to plan and build renewable energy projects.
Ultimately, it will allow our leaders to make smart energy choices for Canada, so that our children, and our children's children, can grow up in the greenest world possible.
Why invest in a map rather than a project that will directly cut carbon emissions? The answer is simple: impact. By mapping out just how much renewable energy Canada can realistically harvest and by giving decision makers the accurate, detailed information they need, this project won't just result in a few solar panels here or a turbine there. Instead, it will drive change on a national scale.
