Profs. Mehrdad Kazerani and Claudio Canizares have been working with Canadian Solar Inc. (CSI) in the establishment of a microgrid test centre at CSI facilities in Guelph. Based on several years of experience and research on their extensive knowledge regarding other microgrid labs and test centres in the world; and their familiarity with the equipment necessary to set up a world-class facility suitable for testing and development of actual microgrids; beyond academic laboratory environments, they were both instrumental in the development of the successful proposal to build the microgrid test centre funded by the Smart Grid Fund from Ontario's Ministry of Energy. They are now directly involved in the design of the test facilities, and one Canizares' former PhD students recently joined CSI to work on the design, construction, and running of the microgrid test centre. In recognition to their important role in this initiative, University of Waterloo researchers will have preferential access to the test facilities and will collaborate with CSI in new microgrid research projects.
