The French Embassy in Canada - France-Canada Mobility Subvention Program
The French Embassy in Canada offers funding to support the mobility of Canadian and French researchers (both to and from France) for research collaboration activities. A formal application process and deadline is not in place but interested researchers should email Sophie Decamps, the Science and Technology Project Officer to the French Consulate in Toronto with their ideas for a proposal and funding will be awarded on a case by case basis. Funding is awarded up to 5,000 Euros per project and is meant to cover the costs of travel and mobility expenses including per diems.
Note: due to recent changes in budget, applications for the France-Canada Mobility Subvention Program should be submitted a year in advance (ideally between September and November).
Please contact Sophie Decamps: sophie.decamps@diplomatie.gouv.fr for more details.
IC-IMPACTS Innovation Demonstration Initiative (IDI)
The objectives of this program are: 1) Encourage the transfer of technology and knowledge resulting from India-Canada research and technology development partnerships; 2) Foster Canada-India collaborative research and trade development activities; 3) Demonstrate the effectiveness of innovative technologies for the Canadian and Indian marketplace; 4) Improve the health, safety and prosperity of communities through the introduction of new technologies in Canada and/or India; and 5) To improve Canada-India economic ties. Proponents submitting a demonstration project proposal are expected to submit budget requests under $25,000. Budgets are expected to consist primarily of costs related to final-stage technology refinement and adoption, and travel for deployment and testing activities. In some circumstances, where proponents of a demonstration and deployment project can clearly substantiate requiring a budget allocation higher than $25,000, this can be considered to a maximum of $45,000.
Economic and Social Research Council (ESCR): Research Grants
Background: The ESRC Research Grants invites proposals from eligible individuals and research teams for standard research projects, large-scale surveys and other infrastructure projects and for methodological developments. The call offers researchers considerable flexibility to focus on any subject area or topic providing that it falls within ESRC’s remit. Proposals can draw from the wider sciences, but the social sciences must represent more than 50 per cent of the research focus and effort. Ambitious and novel research proposals addressing new concepts and techniques and those with the potential for significant scientific or societal and economic impact are particularly encouraged. The grant also encourages fresh ideas from new researchers and appropriate proposals are welcomed from those with limited research experience.
Award: The call is for applications ranging from £350,000 to £1 million (100 per cent full economic cost (fEC)) for a period of up to five years
Fields of Study: Social Science
Eligibility: The lead PI must be based at a UK Research Organization eligible for Research Councils funding. Canadian researchers can be listed as co-investigators. Any academic researcher from an established International Research Organization of comparable standing to an ESRC-recognized UK Research Organization will be eligible for funding.
Application: Applications can only be made through the Research Councils’ Joint Electronic Submission System (Je-S)
Deadline: No fixed closing dates
DFG: Grants to Support the Initiation of International Collaboration
Background: This grant programme aims to support the initiation of international collaboration. It consists of the funding elements “bilateral workshops”, “trips abroad” and “guest visits”. The purpose of workshops is to explore possibilities for international collaboration. Topics must be defined and limited. Trips abroad and guest visits serve to facilitate the preparation of a specific joint project. This funding instrument is not intended to support international conferences (see International Scientific Events), the implementation of joint research projects (see Research Grants) or meetings of research networks (see Research Networks).
Award: Up to €9,450 depending on the type of collaboration
Fields of Study: Any
Eligibility: Funds are for researchers who have already achieved their doctorates and who are working in the German scientific system (e.g. university professors in Germany). Waterloo researchers can apply for an IRPG to fund their participation.
Application: Applications can be found online.
Deadline: Proposals may be submitted at any time by the lead German applicant but must be received no later than three months before the measures are implemented.
European Research Council (ERC) – Consolidator Grant
Background: ERC Consolidator Grants are designed to support researchers at the stage at which they are consolidating their own independent research team or programme. The scheme will strengthen independent and excellent new individual research teams that have been recently created. Applicant Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal.
Award: max EUR 2,000,000 for a period of five years. However, up to an additional EUR 750 000 can be requested in the proposal to cover (a) eligible "start-up" costs for Principal Investigators moving to the EU or an Associated Country from elsewhere as a consequence of receiving the ERC grant and/or (b) the purchase of major equipment and/or (c) access to large facilities.
Eligibility: For researchers of any nationality with over 7 and up to 12 years of experience since completion of PhD. ERC grants are open to researchers from anywhere in the world but the host institution needs to be established in a EU member state or Associated country to H2020. Principal investigators are required only to spend a minimum of 50 per cent of their work time on the project and a minimum of 50 per cent of their work time in an EU Member State or Associated Country. They can spend the other half of their time in Canada.

Background: Scaling Off-Grid Energy seeks to spur a vibrant marketplace of enterprises that provide off-grid energy solutions that meet the needs of low-income consumers across the African continent, providing access to modern, clean, and affordable electricity. To address early market challenges, the Scaling Off-Grid Energy Grand Challenge for Development will kick off with the Global Lighting and Energy Access Partnership (LEAP) Awards Off-Grid Refrigeration Competition. The Awards seek to catalyze new technological advancements and identify best-in-class commercially available off-grid refrigerators. By inspiring greater participation and innovation in the market, we hope to ultimately provide customers with greater access to affordable refrigeration technology that is compatible with off-grid energy sources. Our vision is to increase the availability of these high-demand products, and in turn increase demand for appropriate solar home systems.
