Background: The Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) is the only private, grant making institution with a national and international scope whose sole mission is to support solid waste research and education initiatives.  Our research grants program is led by our Research Council (Council), a body of volunteers consisting of technical experts in industry, academia and consulting.  The work of the Council is guided by a long range strategic plan with the goal to achieve greater sustainability, good environmental stewardship, higher process efficiency and increased knowledge.  The recommended projects are then reviewed by our Board of Directors Projects Committee for a final review and funding allocation.  Non-research oriented projects are reviewed and recommended to the Projects Committee by technical staff. 

Proposal Submission and RFP: Researchers are invited to submit proposals on solid waste management issues contained in EREF's Strategic Research Plan or on educational projects.  EREF routinely assesses research needs within the solid waste field via the EREF's Council, a committee comprised of industry stakeholders and academia.  General and/or targeted requests for proposals are generated at the request of the Council by EREF staff.  Grant proposals submitted in response to a posted RFP are considered solicited.  All other proposals are considered unsolicited.

Unless noted in a specific RFP, all non-research oriented proposals (e.g. educational projects) MUST follow the protocol for unsolicited proposals.

Proposals submitted in response to this RFP that do not address a specific topic in the research agenda will not be reviewed.  Projects and research previously funded by the Foundation can be viewed on EREF's Web site.  

Award:  Generally, awards will be made up to $500,000. Previously grants have ranged from $15,000 to over $500,000 with the average being $100,000
