Zoom Webinar | WISE Public Lecture: Local Energy Flexibility in Future Power Systems
ABSTRACT:
Flexibility is the ability of a power system to manage variability at any time scale. Grid modernization and evolution, driven by electrification and increased renewables, will require more flexibility. Local energy systems, i.e., resources on the distribution system, have the potential to meet a significant portion of new flexibility needs. This seminar will present a conceptual picture of future flexible communities and the devices and systems behind it.

BIO:
Steven Wong has been a researcher with the Government of Canada’s Department of Natural Resources Canada CanmetENERGY Research Laboratory in Varennes since 2010. There, he is a Research Advisor in the Renewable Energy Integration Group, whose activities include working with partners in government, industry, and academia to “act as a supplier and catalyst for a sustainable energy future for Canada.” Dr. Wong obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo.
His research experience spans the fields of renewable integration and smart grid, including distribution, bulk, and remote community system operation, electric and thermal storage, wind and solar generation, and innovative energy markets. He also serves as an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Waterloo.
