E2e Project - $250,000 Funding Opportunity
Request for Letters of Inquiry on Energy Efficiency Research
Due: June 30, 2016
The E2e Project solicits Letters of Inquiry for innovative economic research on critical and novel energy efficiency issues. This solicitation targets evaluations of existing energy efficiency projects or programs within the U.S. and Canada using state-of-the-art empirical techniques such as randomized controlled trials or high quality quasi-experimental methodologies. The maximum funding request per project is $250,000.
The focus of this request is research proposals that contribute to new knowledge and insights on energy efficiency and its real-world impacts. Several sample areas of interest are:
- Size of the energy efficiency gap
- Welfare consequences of energy efficiency investments
- Effective applications of behavioral insights in the energy domain
- Market opportunities to catalyze energy efficiency investment
- Relationship between energy efficiency programs or regulations and innovation
Eligibility: Eligibility will be restricted to faculty proposing economic research on energy efficiency issues within North America.
Process: LOIs must be submitted to The E2e Project by June 30, 2016. A Review Committee will screen the submissions and select a small set of projects to submit a complete proposal to E2e in Fall 2016. These invited proposals will be reviewed and potentially recommended to the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for funding by the end of 2016.
Applications: LOIs are due by 5:00pm PDT on Thursday, June 30, 2016. Please submit proposals to Karen Notsund: knotsund@berkeley.edu with subject heading: E2e LOI – <Researcher’s name>

- Project title
- Name and CV of Principal investigator(s)
- Specific research questions and objectives of the project
- The letters of inquiry should clearly describe the underlying project and the evaluation, including (i) a summary of the policy problem that motivates this research, and (ii) a description of the treatment, evaluation design, target population, and implementing partners.
- A 150-200 word abstract of the study. The abstract should include information on the hypotheses to be examined, research methodology, and the outcomes that will be measured.
- A rough budget for the proposed project (maximum funding request is $250,000, to be spent over 2 years). Covered expenses include:
a. One month faculty summer salary capped at $25,000 per year
b. Graduate student researcher support
c. Access to data
d. Project-required travel
e. Research-related support staff - A rough estimate of the duration of the proposed project.
- Identify potential research partners.
